A Phone With a Fan. In 2026.
I've been using phones professionally long enough to remember when putting a fingerprint reader under the display felt ambitious. Today Redmi is launching the K90 Max in China, and the headline feature is a physical cooling fan. Not a vapor chamber. Not graphite sheets. An actual, spinning fan — the largest ever fitted in a smartphone, according to Xiaomi Group president Lu Weibing, capable of dropping internal temperatures by 10°C in under 100 seconds.
My first instinct was to roll my eyes. My second instinct, after a week of my current daily driver throttling after twenty minutes of Genshin, was to take it seriously. If you actually game on your phone, thermal throttling is the wall you hit every single time.
The Battery Is the Real Story
Forget the fan for a second. The K90 Max ships with an 8,550mAh silicon-carbon battery using 16% silicon content, which is a genuinely bonkers number. For context, the iPhone 17 Pro Max sits around 4,685mAh and the Galaxy S25 Ultra tops out at 5,000mAh. Redmi is packing nearly double the capacity into a phone that, on paper, isn't much thicker than either.
Silicon-carbon chemistry is the reason this is even possible. Traditional graphite anodes cap out around 372 mAh/g; silicon theoretically reaches 4,200 mAh/g. The tradeoff has always been swelling and cycle life, but manufacturers have gotten the silicon ratio dialed in enough that we're now seeing 16% blends ship in consumer hardware. Two-day battery life on a flagship used to be a pipe dream. At 8,550mAh with modern power management, it's just Tuesday.
Performance: Dimensity 9500 Plus a Dedicated GPU Chip
The K90 Max runs MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 paired with a separate D2 graphics chip — essentially a phone-scale discrete GPU for frame interpolation and ray-traced effects in games. Geekbench leaks peg the Dimensity 9500 at 3,513 single-core and 10,711 multi-core with 16GB of RAM, which puts it right in the mix with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Apple's A19 Pro.
The 6.83-inch 1.5K display runs at 165Hz with DC dimming, and the whole package gets IP66/68/69 certification. Charging is 100W wired and 22.5W reverse wired — no wireless, which is a curious omission on a phone this ambitious.
Who Actually Wants This?
Here's where I have to be honest with you. I've been in the "bigger number equals better phone" camp plenty of times, and I've always regretted it. The Asus ROG phones of the world keep adding gaming gimmicks, and I keep returning them after two weeks because they're exhausting to carry and the software feels like someone bolted RGB onto Android.
But the K90 Max isn't quite that phone. A fan is obviously a gaming feature, yes. But a gigantic battery and aggressive thermals aren't gaming-only perks — they're the two things that make a phone feel better a year into ownership, when the battery has taken some cycles and the SoC has to work harder for the same tasks. If this thing is still doing eight hours of screen-on time in 2028, nobody will care that it launched with a goofy fan.
The Catch: It's a China Launch
The K90 Max is a China-only launch for now, running HyperOS 3 on top of Android. If you're reading this in the US or EU, you're looking at importing through Trading Shenzhen or AliExpress and hoping the bands work with your carrier. The Poco branded variant — which usually lands a few months later for global markets — is the realistic path for most people.
Pricing in China starts at around ¥3,999 for the base variant (roughly $550 USD), which is absurd for what's in the box. Even accounting for import tax and the usual 30-40% markup, this lands well under flagship prices elsewhere.
Verdict From a Serial Phone Switcher
The best phone is the one you actually enjoy using, and I can't tell you if you'll enjoy a phone with a fan until I spend two weeks with one. But the specs alone — that battery, that thermal setup, that display — make the K90 Max one of the most interesting Android launches of 2026. I'm importing one.
